Ryan Reynolds Congratulates Christopher Nolan's the Odyssey for Surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine to Become Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie of All Time

The one thing Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of an ancient Greek epic and Reynold’s fourth wall-breaking Deadpool flick with Hugh Jackman have in common is that each of them has been the world’s highest grossing R-rated film at one point.

The Odyssey now holds the title, officially surpassing the $1 billion mark earlier this month. It’s the highest-grossing film in Christopher Nolan’s filmography and one of the biggest releases of the year, eclipsed only by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has grossed over $2 billion as one of the highest-earning Marvel movies in history.

At the time of writing, The Odyssey has reportedly grossed $1.34 billion. Deadpool & Wolverine’s theatrical run ended with a total of $1.338 billion. Screenings for The Odyssey are still underway, with 70MM IMAX screenings getting extended through September 16.

There’s no hard feelings, though, as Ryan Reynolds has publicly congratulated Nolan and the team with a humorous video on social media. The short clip combines two scenes from each film, seemingly shot in similar (or perhaps the same) location. As Matt Damon quietly treks through a forest with his men, Deadpool and Wolverine duke it out inside a fourth-generation Honda Odyssey minivan, with the video swapping back and forth from the heroes’ chaotic fight to the tense quietude of Odysseus's journey.

“I take it back,” an exhausted Deadpool says in the clip. “The Odyssey f***s hard.”

“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car,” Reynolds captioned the post.

It’s been a great summer at the movies, a trend that’s looking to continue into the fall and winter months as Dune Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday approach for December releases. Coyote vs Acme is also slated for its long-awaited August 28 theatrical release, already earning rave reviews from critics and debuting with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are also looking at a possible return to the big screen this winter, if their recent appearances in Doomsday marketing mean anything. Reynolds notably appeared at Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con in July, and both actors shared a humorous scene during Marvel’s showcase at D23 in August.
