‘Hope’ Trailer: Giant Alien Monsters, Crashing Spaceships and Wild Gun Battles Create Carnage in Neon’s Insane Korean Sci-Fi Action-Thriller
The full trailer for Na Hong-Jin‘s “Hope” is finally here ahead of its Sep. 9 U.S. release with Neon and it’s got a little something for everyone. Well, at least everyone who enjoys their films with massive alien monsters, giant spaceships plummeting from the sky and ludicrously-paced over-the-top action sequences.
The buzzy, balls-to-the-wall sci-fi action-thriller shook up a slumbering Cannes earlier this year with a late night slot in Competition, emerging with many already declaring the 160-minute film to be a cult classic.
Written and directed by Korean auteur Na (“The Wailing”), “Hope” stars Hwang Jung-Min, Zo In-Sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, with the carnage unfolding in a sleep South Korean fishing village.

It’s there where police outpost chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked widespread havoc. Meanwhile, in a nearby forest a group of local hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung), set out to track the beast themselves. As the trailer quickly underlines, any relative calm soon gives way to relentless chases and gun battles on foot, in cars and on horseback as the human survivors battle an assortment of terrifying extraterrestrial monsters — and all at a bonkers tempo.
“Hope” was produced by Na’s production banner Forged Films and Plus M Entertainment. Plus M Entertainment is handling international sales. The film is releasing in Korean on July 15.
Neon acquired the film before Cannes for North American and holds U.K. and Australian rights, while Mubi later bought it for Latin America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey.
Speaking in Cannes, Na said he’d already written a script for a “Hope” sequel.
