Paralives Team Might Have Shed Some Light On Why The Sims Ditched Its Open World

The Sims 4 juggled multiple ideas during development, but one idea from its predecessor that was eventually scrapped was the idea of an open-world city for players to explore. Instead, The Sims 4 offered smaller, instanced neighborhoods that were separated by loading screens, something that many fans considered to be a major step back from what The Sims 3 had achieved.

So what was the reason for these smaller locales? The Sims 3 was notorious for how it pushed PCs to the edge with its demanding gameplay, which often resulted in game crashes and save files being lost. This aspect of the life-sim genre is one that the developers of Paralives spoke to GameSpot about, explaining how creating a living, breathing world populated with unique townies isn't exactly a walk in the park.

"One of our [developers] said that the open world actually is one of the toughest challenges because everything is intertwined with each other," Paralive's communication manager Gab Boyer-Antoni said to GameSpot. "Anything in the town that needs to be worked on then needs to be optimized and checked to make sure it doesn't clash with other [items]. There's path-finding, there's autonomy, there's buildings, and [it all] requires a lot of work. That's definitely a feature that keeps on giving when it comes to challenges."

Fortunately, other parts of Paralives proved to be much easier to work on, like the game's memorable tutorial set on a train. "In terms of one that was actually easier than we thought, at the beginning of the game, there's an intro tutorial on the train, and that is something that the team scheduled to do from A to Z in one week--we didn't have time to go overboard with that," Boyer-Antoni explained. "And it actually worked [even though] it was something that was not at all in the game before. It wasn't supported, but then they worked on it for a week, [and] everybody involved [made] it work. [It] didn't need that much more work afterward, and it seems like it's not really buggy so far."

Paralives launched in early access back in May, and since then, the social life-sim has continued to improve and build on its foundation with free content updates. A collaboration between Paralives and Unpacking saw numerous free items added to the game, and its first major content update is expected to arrive this fall.
