Bela Bajaria to Receive the Variety Vanguard Award at Mipcom
Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix, will receive the Variety Vanguard Award recognizing her contributions to the global content business during this year’s Mipcom conference in Cannes.
Bajaria will receive the kudo from Variety and Mipcom on Oct. 12, the opening day of the four-day event that will be oriented this year toward studying new content business models and monetization opportunities. Bajaria has been at the forefront of the streaming transformation of the entertainment industry with her role at Netflix, in which she oversees an unprecedented budget to acquire and produce movies and TV programs at a mind-boggling scale across a multitude of languages and regions.
As part of the award presentation, Bajaria will sit for an on-stage interview with Cynthia Littleton, Variety co-editor in chief, at the Palais des Festivals.

“Bela Bajaria came up through the top tier of Hollywood’s traditional television business, and then joined Netflix just in time to upend the status quo with leadership roles at a company that has changed how the content business operates and how consumers watch television,” Littleton said. “Bela has been successful, creatively ambitious and entrepreneurial in the senior management roles that she has held across three of Hollywood’s biggest conglomerates: CBS, NBCUniversal and, for the last 10 years, at Netflix. She is most deserving of this recognition.”
Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 as VP of content. She quickly gathered more authority and more programming turf, ascending to the top job of chief content officer in 2023. From the mid-1990s through 2011, Bajaria rose through the ranks at CBS Entertainment in programming and studio production roles. In 2011, she was recruited to NBCUniversal to lead a revival of Universal Television as a full-fledged studio that sold projects to networks and platforms all over town.
“Bela Bajaria is one of the most consequential and influential executives in global entertainment,” said Lucy Smith, director of Mipcom Cannes and Mipcom Junior. “Through her leadership, Netflix has fundamentally reshaped the global entertainment business, demonstrating the power of bold creative ambition and truly global storytelling. It is our privilege to partner with Variety to recognize Bela’s exceptional achievements and to welcome her to the Mipcom stage, where the global entertainment community comes together to exchange ideas, forge partnerships and explore the opportunities shaping our industry.”
Mipcom in recent years has leaned into the creator economy, vertical dramas and AI trends, in an evolution from its roots as a programming market. This year the conference is geared to examining the major upheaval in content and distribution, and to help connect networks, studios, platforms, creators, brands and tech innovators to explore opportunities.
Variety will publish a standalone extra edition on Mipcom on Oct. 9, in print and on digital platforms.
