Netflix Inks Exclusive Deal for Video Episodes of Vox Media Podcasts ‘Unexplainable,’ ‘Switched on Pop’

Netflix is still signing checks to fill out its growing podcast lineup. The streamer’s latest pact is with the Vox Media Podcast Network, now owned by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, for exclusive rights to video versions of podcasts “Unexplainable” and “Switched on Pop.”

Under the deal, video episodes of Vox’s “Unexplainable” and Vulture’s “Switched on Pop” will begin rolling out on Netflix the week of July 13.

The two titles are the first Vox Media titles to join Netflix — and both podcasts are now shifting to “always-on video programming.” Video episodes of both shows will be exclusive to Netflix, while audio episodes will continue to be available on all major podcast platforms.

“Unexplainable,” Vox’s podcast exploring scientific mysteries, will publish weekly video episodes on Mondays. The first episodes coming to Netflix tackle such questions as how we know what we know about dinosaurs; why some people hear music while others hear lyrics when they listen to songs; and why we may want to rethink our relationship with the sun. “Unexplainable” is co-hosted by Noam Hassenfeld, Byrd Pinkerton, Sally Helm and Meradith Hoddinott.

“Switched on Pop” is hosted by songwriter Charlie Harding and musicologist Nate Sloan, a professor at USC’s Thornton School of Music. The duo break down musical ideas and production choices behind today’s biggest hits, pulling songs apart to understand how they work and why they matter.

“As more and more people are watching podcasts on screens both big and small, we’re excited to partner with Netflix to bring our shows to streaming audiences worldwide,” said Ray Chao, SVP and general manager of podcasts at Vox Media.

In May, Murdoch’s Lupa acquired New York Magazine (including Vulture and The Cut), the Vox Media Podcast Network and Vox.com for more than $300 million. Lupa said it officially closed the deal on July 7; Jim Bankoff, who co-founded Vox Media, serves as CEO of the new company. Separately, PMC (parent of Variety) announced a deal to acquire other Vox Media digital brands, including Eater, The Verge, SB Nation, Popsugar, The Dodo, Punch and Thrillist.
